  • Dryer too hot

    Whirlpool
    model: LER5636EQ0
    Gets up to near 170F
put new operating stat in and no change.
Question: If temp gets too far above 155, or whatever a thermostat is rated, why does the operating stat not kill power to the element regardless of the cause, except maybe shorted element?
I have had this dryer in my shop for a while. Been tied up with other things and have not dealt with appliances in a while.
I assume I have already cleaned the filter and housing including blower wheel housing and interior of the dryer.

    Hi Rick,

Been tied up with other things and have not dealt with appliances in a while.
    I hope everything is ok!

    Where abouts?...at the exhaust exit?

put new operating stat in and no change

Definitely worth checking the heating element to see if it is grounded or has been grounding out!

I assume I have already cleaned the filter and housing including blower wheel housing and interior of the dryer.
Drum seals ok? Door seal ok? ...and we are not sneaking air in and through the dryer the wrong way?

      Hello Jeff.
Every thing is good. Hope all is well with you.
I have been tied up renovating a house I recently bought.
Not sure about the felt in this dryer. I think I was anticipating needing to change it.
It just hit me as to why the operating stat does not kill the heat at the rated temperature regardless of the cause of the overheating.
Shorted element is one of the first things I check when this happens.
I now suspect the element might be shorting against the housing only when it gets hot and maybe sagging against the housing.
It does seem to make a slight thumb sometimes while running. That sort of makes me suspect the drum felt.
If it is the drum felt, shouldn’t the stat still cycle the heat properly?
I disassemble and clean all the dryers I get.
Btw, it is not connected to any exhaust. Just checking temp at exhaust tube on the dryer itself.

Best place!...right at the **** of the dryer ?

Those newer 1/2 short element style are bad for that.....the frame cracks and the element can intermittently short to ground and stay on.

Normally the air comes in past the heating element, through the drum and out the fan blower area where the operating thermostat is.
If a drum seal is bad some of the air could get sucked into the drum and out the exhaust without going through the heating element cage and this affects the air temp and tricks the thermostat to stay on longer than it should or simply not measure the correct temps.

Let us know what you see/find once you have checked the heating element.

WOW, you have more energy than I have!

I checked the element. It is shorting.
Kind of surprised it cycles at all.
p.S. We had a rental ran into by a doper.
Took half the money I received from my insurance and bought the house I was raised in. Will be a lot better income as it will be four berm, and apartment and like 600 square ft storage building.
I then sold the house that was ran into.
