    Appliance Tip of the Week...

    Some freezer food storage tips....

Freezing purchased frozen foods: Keep them in their original containers. Such foods include TV dinners, fish, bulk vegetables, pies, cakes, pastries, berries, etc.

Freezing meats, fish & poultry: Wrap well in freezer weight foil, forming it carefully to the shape of the meat. Fold and crimp the ends of the package to provide a good lasting seal.

Never ever re-use thawed, uncooked meat: Meat may be frozen successfully only one time when raw, and only one time after cooking.

Freezing home-cooked foods: Keep these in containers of wax-coated cardboard, aluminum foil or plastic. Foods cooked in pyrex ware or corning ware can be stored right in those dishes with tight fitting covers.

Freezing fresh foods & vegetable: Select only high quality produce. The condition before freezing will determine it's quality when served. Prepare foods quickly and carefully, avoid excessive handling. Pack the food in odorless, moisture-proof containers to prevent it from drying out and absorbing other odors. Freeze immediately after packing. Thawed foods should be used as quickly as possible.

Freezer section- Suggested freezer storage times for other food items: Most fruits & vegetable - 8 to 12 months. Lean fish - 6 to 8 months. Fatty fish, breads, rolls, soups, stews, casseroles 2 to 3 months. Cakes, pies, sandwiches, leftovers ( cooked ) - 1 month. Ice cream ( original carton ) - 1 month maximum.

Cleaning the hot condenser coils help....

The condenser coils ( hot coils ) should be cleaned once a year. If you have a pet with long hair, probably a good idea to clean yours more often...maybe every 6 months. Cleaning the condenser coils will save energy and help the refrigerator run better and more efficiently.

The simplest condenser coil is the static condenser, it runs up and down the back of the refrigerator & can be easily cleaned with a rag or vacuum cleaner with the brush attachment.

Some condenser coils run from the front to the back under the refrigerator. This means you should clean from the front and the back ( part#J ) of the refrigerator. The space on the front is often small and tight. A Condenser cleaning brush will assist in cleaning off the coils, or can be used to pull the dust forward and then vacuumed from there. To gain access to the coils on the back, protect your floor and pull the refrigerator from the wall, usually need to remove the cardboard or metal cover to clean up the coils from the back. If all of the hot condenser coils are on the back of the refrigerator, protect the floor and pull the refrigerator out from the wall to clean the condenser coils with a vacuum or brush from the back. If the bottom front opening is large enough, it may be possible with the coil cleaning brush to clean the back coils from the front.

    Tips for storing a Refrigerator....

In preparing your refrigerator for long periods of non-use, be sure to remove all food from both compartments. If your refrigerator features an ice and water dispenser or you have an automatic ice maker installed, turn off the icemaker by raising the wire arm. The valve where you tapped into the water line supply should also be turned off. Drain the water from the holding tank and plastic tubing for the water dispenser by placing a pitcher under dispenser and filling until the water stops.

Disconnect the refrigerator from the electrical outlet. Clean the refrigerator thoroughly, including the defrost pan ( usually located under or at the back of the refrigerator ). Use a mild detergent or two tablespoons of baking soda per quart of warm water. If your refrigerator has glass shelves, allow them to warm to room temperature before cleaning. Dry the interior. Leave the doors open to prevent odors from forming.
