Measuring the CUFT of an Appliance Helps and Tips

Some refrigerator model numbers have the cuft in the model number Many/most do not

Sometimes you are selling your appliance and the future buyer wants to know the cuft of your old appliance.

Sometimes you are replacing your old appliance and you want something similar in size like your old one was. Sometimes you are replacing your old appliance and you want something larger in size because your family has grown.

Sections below are meant to help you measure and calculate the cuft of your appliance.

    Refrigerator

Measuring the space inside your refrigerator might not be your first choice of activity for a Saturday afternoon, but it has its purposes. How to measure the inside of a fridge, freezer, or side-by-side refrigerator.

If the fridge is very full, you'll need to temporarily remove enough food to give yourself some measuring space. It's important to measure the space inside the fridge, and not the dimensions of the fridge exterior. Measure the length, width and height of the space inside the fridge. Make sure you note them all down in the same unit! Mixing inches with cm, for example, will give you an inaccurate calculation. Multiply the three numbers together.

Length (feet) x Width (feet) x Height (feet) = Volume in cubic feet.

    Example: 5.8ft x 1.8ft x 2.2ft = 22.97 cuft or rounded up to 23 cuft.

How do you measure the cubic feet of an chest or upright freezer...

Grab a tape measure and measure the width, depth and height of the inside of your refrigerator. Multiply the numbers together (W x D x H) and divide the total by 1728 to get the cubic feet. For example, if you have a freezer that measures 30" wide by 30" deep by 48" high, you multiply 30 X 30 X 48 = 25 cuft.

    Gas or Electric oven

Before starting your oven measurement, ensure it's switched off at the main and cool to the touch. You should empty the oven of any internal shelves to get the most adequate measurement you can.

Take a tape measure and run it along the top of your oven until it reaches the back. Take a measurement of your oven's depth in inches and record it. Next, measure your oven's width in inches along the top of the oven and, again, record. Finally, measure the height of your oven, from its top to its bottom and record once more.

Multiply these three measurements together to give yourself the cubic inches of your oven capacity. Then, divide this number by 1,728. This will give you the precise measurement of cubic feet of an oven. Example: 24 X 18 X 24 divided by 1728 = 6 cuft oven.

    Electric or Gas dryer

The capacity of a dryer is measured by its drum volume in cubic feet. The size determines the amount of clothes that you can dry at a time. If you have a large family, or prefer to do laundry only on occasion, consider a larger dryer. Compact dryers can be as small as two cubic feet ,and extra-large dryers can exceed seven cubic feet. To calculate the volume, measure the depth and diameter of the dryer.

Measure the depth of the dryer from the back to the door opening.

Measure the diameter of the dryer. Divide the diameter by two to find the radius. For example, if the diameter is three feet, the radius is 1.5 feet.

Calculate the size of the dryer by squaring the radius and multiplying by the depth. For example, if the radius is 1.5 feet and the depth is two feet, the volume is 4.5 cubic feet (1.5 x 1.5 x 2).

    Washing machine

The size of a washer is important because it determines the load capacity, and you need a machine that works for the size of your family. The higher the capacity, the more room for clothes. Because washer tubs are cylinders, you can use the formula for finding the volume of the cylinder to determine the capacity of a washer.

Measure the depth inside the washer with a measuring tape. For front-loading machines, measure from the back of the washer tub to the front. Measure the depth for a top-loading washer from the bottom of the tub to the top. For example, a washing machine may have a depth of 1.75 feet.

Measure the diameter of the tub. This is the distance from one side of the tub to the other side. For example, the inside of a washer may be 1.5 feet.

Divide the diameter by two, and square it. In the example, 1.5 divided by 2 equals 0.75, and 0.75 to the power of 2 equals 0.5625.

Multiply the number calculated above by the depth of the tub. In the example, 0.5625 times 1.75 equals 0.98.

Multiply the number calculated in Step 4 by pi to determine the capacity. Pi is approximately 3.14. In the example, 0.98 times 3.14 equals a washer capacity of about 3.1 cubic feet.
